Sending program changes to PC3K8 from ipad

Postby scradley1960 » Sat Jan 04, 2020 9:46 am

Hi
I play keys in a rock band.
I want to send a command from my iPad (ForScore) to switch setups when I switch chord charts. The program will do it but after reading the manual and reading up on midi i still can’t figure out what command to send the keyboard.
The ForScore program has fields for (wants to know) this info:

Ch.
MSB
LSB
0-127

Can anyone help me?

For changing setups/multis from external, you need to first enable Local Keyboard Channel to one channel. From your external machine, send MIDI Program and Bank changes through that channel, then your setups/multis will change.

Thanks Hipogrito. I did figure out that much. What I can't figure out is what actual commands to send. Espe the MSB/LSB numbers. I read the manual but I can't figure out how to translate from say, my Setup #1301 (Copperhead Road for me), to the numbers that the iPad can send, which are:
Ch.
MSB
LSB
0-127

So Ch. I arbitrarily chosen Ch 12 since I don't use it for anything else. But the other 3 fields i'm lost...

So, you want to select program 1301.

WRONG: Divide by 127 and drop the fraction to get 10.
Divide by 128 and drop the fraction to get 10.
This becomes your bank select number.

Since it's less than 128, the Most Significant Byte (MSB) of the bank number is 0, and the Least Significant Byte (LSB) is 10. (And, yes, they aren't really 8-bit bytes...)

Now, start over, but figure out the remainder:
WRONG: Take 1301, and subtract 10 * 127 from it, to get 31.
Take 1301, and subtract 10 * 128 from it, to get 21.
This becomes your program number in the selected bank.

WRONG: So, channel 12, MSB 0, LSB 31, prog 31.
So, channel 12, MSB 0, LSB 10, prog 21.
I think that should do it.

Yep, it's gross.

But, once you set the MSB/LSB, you don't really have to keep sending them every time, if the new program is in the same bank. MIDI lets you do that, but maybe that application forces MSB/LSB/prog each time.

(I really liked the 0-99 banks on the K2000 series! So much easier, even though it did veer from MIDI's 0-127.)

Good luck!

Edit: 2020-01-12 with much thanks to ioannes for seeing my mistakes!

I think we need to divide by 128 (0..127 are 128 IDs)

so 1301/128 = 10 (without fraction)
and (1301 - 10*128) = 21

bank = 10
prog = 21
