Original played on a Juno 6 in the Studio and often with a Minimoog live.

.PC3K file contains sound, user algorithms, an FX chain for the chorus + compressor and a demo song (just the bass line for the intro and firstt verse & chorus, unquantized).

Synth -- A#1 - A#4

Guitar -- C5 - G#6

Sax -- C5 - G#6

Bell chimes -- C7 - G9

The Guitar and Sax share the same key range. I use an expression pedal to switch between them. The multi loads with the Guitar up first.

I put a simple drum beat in there. (You don't have to use this- the multi is just fine for covering the song without it.) It starts when you press G#1. Walk up from D#1 - G#1. Synth bass notes are mapped to those keys, so it feels natural to kick off the beat. I turn drums off with the middle pedal of my triple pedal. Hit G#1 to start the beat again.

This is a pretty basic 3 zone setup, but I did a few new things that I wanted to share. I increased the velocity response on the lead string sound to get a more aggressive sound without playing hard. This makes it easier to play the 16th notes on the intro. On the intro, I also play the root position triads (B and A) and double the root with my thumb. this triggers a special brass program that does a sfz - cresc sound in major chords. I think it worked well with my small band (no horns). The 3rd bank button adds some string pad to the rhodes. Behind the guitar solo, I used sampled brass sounds for the lead notes layered on top of the synth sound. It may not be perfect, but i felt it gave the best combination of real-ness and fat-ness. If anyone chooses to try this setup, please let me know what you think. -Phil

The very nice organ in this song isn't exactly copied by this remake of one of my jazzy organ sounds, but it's close, adn this is a very usable organ sound, even though it isn't all perfect, it gets the normal harmonic feel pretty well: http://www.theover.org/Keybdmg/pc3os221_onlyafool1.mp3 1 min 05 m3 (stereo 44.1 256 kbs) No attempt at fancy playing, just an idea of some of the original songs harmonic figures and rythmic variations. This example from the downloadable sound is recorded like I've described in my Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" post. Most of the ROM organs will sound more distorted in certain fixed ways than I like, so this sound is meant as a clear improvement, lending itself for such great classic organ sounds. You'd better upgrade to OS221 to use my recent sounds, because I'm not sure the sound-jerkyness much more present in the older OSes will do much justice to this type of sound. Of course feel free to try. T.V.
