SPSetups: User Setups for the SP4 Series: Banks 5 and 6 (.SPX format)

SPSetups Banks are banks of 64 User Setups for the Kurzweil SP series of synthesizers.
The Setups in each SPSetup bank have been created by i) “layering” existing, publicly-available Program sounds and, in many cases, ii) adding one of the SP4's onboard digital processing effects.

Attached are the following:

An "Instructions for Use" document (pdf format)

Two SPSetups banks provided as .SPX files (which can be loaded to the SP from a PC, via the SP's Global mode)

Remember to FIRST Save All your existing SP User objects, THEN load an SPSetup bank and enjoy!

I tried Bank 5 for my SP6.
Works fine for me and needs almost no tuning.

The sounds are great for me.

Best regards,
Frank

I tried some banks (4-5-6) on my SP4-7 (very quickly, I have to admit, as I'm involved in four bands with upcoming gigs and need to restore my setlists - including a bunch of programs I converted from the PC3 / PC3LE series - for rehearsal).
There are a lot of interesting combinations in your banks, indeed.
One question: did you manage to connect both switch pedals to the dedicated connector? I noticed (if I'm not wrong) in all setups there is no assignment for the second switch pedal (and for the CC pedal in many)...

BTW SP4-7 is a good lightweight option for a number of situations, but I will soon replace it with a PC3 (I had one before) or PC3K7 keyboard. I miss the extreme flexibility both as a sound generator (in my opinion the 16 FX units are necessary if you want to tweak, for instance, the rotary speaker effect to get better results) and as a controller.

Thanks for your message.
I only use a sustain pedal on my SP4, so I never considered other pedals / cc switches while generating the sounds in the SPSetups banks.
I agree that the PC3K is vastly (pardon the pun) superior to the SP4. But the little SP4 is a great little package - a good design that offers a lot, especially when the on-board effects are applied creatively. Plus the simplicity of the SP4 can occasionally be a relief compared to it’s more illustrious PC3K/L cousins
(... but I luuurv my PC3K :D )

I tried to load the .3sb files with my Soundtower editor, but it will only allow me to load .pc3 files?
Is there a newer editor or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Neil

Hi Neil,
Are you using “SP” SoundEditor software? Are you trying to load the 3sb format banks into an SP series keyboard?
If in doubt, load the Banks into an SP4 using the SPX format files and Global mode.
Good luck

I would add... Backup your whole sp4 memory in advance!
One useful thing which may help is the old sp4manager software. It's a free one which works fairly well and runs on several platforms, with some caveats:
- Windows 64 bit version doesn't work on Windows 10
- MacOs version doesn't work on Sierra and later OSes
- it can import Roy's setups but can't export them unless you remove all the objects (programs and setups) exceeding the 64 user memory locations (and once this is done, if you have replaced the factory objects with your own ones, the former will be restored if you load the modified spx file).
If you want to look at the bank contents before loading, it's perfect.

Yes - absolutely agree with the previous comment - ALWAYS back up your existing settings before loading an .3sb or .SPX SPSetups bank. Please read the Instructions For Use (IFU) PDF doc I uploaded together with the SPSetups banks.

To help folks navigate the SPSetups banks I will upload a PDF doc ("SPSetups Vol 1-6 List.pdf") to the Volumes/Compilations area of the site. This will provide the names and User Setup bank positions of the 64 sounds in each SPSetups bank.

Hi Roy,
I've loaded your setup banks using the global load overwrite without any problems. It'll take a while to go through them all! But well worth it.
I was hoping to use the editor to load them into higher numbered slots ( above 127. I access them using my Korg M50 keyboard via MIDI). I have an SPS4-8 keyboard, with 2.10 code loaded, and SP4 editor version 2.1.1, April 2013.
It seems to accept a .3sb file if I copy and paste it into the ''open file' dialogue, but won't let me select anything except .kp3 files otherwise. I'm still playing with getting it to work, but wondered if you had a different version of the Soundtower editor which supports these files properly??

Hi Neil,
I am a very basic user of the SoundTower editor, so I defer to the community for advice related to this software.
I am using SoundTower "SP SoundEditor" version 2.2.1 Apr20, 2013 for SP4, with a Kurzweil SP4-7 with OS: 2.10.685, Obj: 2.10.1.

Remember, when auditioning the sounds in the SPSetups banks, don't forget to experiment with the Control pot, Reverb setting on each sound, as this may activate an AUX effect which could significantly impact the character of the sound.
Enjoy,
Roy

I'm an idiot! I was selecting the top left 'file' instead of the 'FILE' button on the right of the Setup page. Everything working now! Sorry for the bother.
