Hi folks,
My name is Terry and I live in Tulsa, OK. I play in a couple of local bands (one rock and the other blues). Between the two bands I have gigs about once or twice a month.
I have a long history with Kurzweil equipment. My first exposure to Kurzweil was the K1000PX Expander sound module. I really loved the sounds of that thing and immediately upgraded it to the K1200 Pro when it came out. I wrote my own "users guide" for these modules which Alexander Press published in 1989. I didn't start out to write a book, but eventually it turned into one.
After using my sound module with a Yamaha KX88 for quite a few years, I switched to a Roland RD-500 piano (I was playing jazz gigs in a trio at that time and wanted to simplify my setup) which I upgraded a few years later to an RD-600 and later still to an RD-700. I put my K1200 in a rack at home where it still sits. I still occasionally will fire it up and play through it because many of its voices have held up quite well. [In a fit of nostalgia, I actually bought a used K1000 AX plus a few years ago. I had always wanted one when I was playing the K1000 but could not afford it. Now I can -- of course, gear of that vintage is now very cheap. <G>]
A few more years passed and I started playing backup for my cousin who is an Elvis impersonator. <G> I needed synth sounds, horns, strings, etc., to cover some of the Elvis tunes so I used that as an excuse to get the K2661 as an upper keyboard.
About 4 years ago, my cousin quit doing the Elvis thing but I had the "rock" bug now so I started playing with some local bands. I was wanting to get some better organ sounds so I got a Roland VK-7 Combo Organ which I used mostly in a solo configuration.
Two years ago I had a run-in with the back surgeon so had to downsize the weight of my gear. My VK-7 was replaced with a (believe it or not!) Casio Privia PX-3 and my K2661 with a Hammond SK1. <sigh> My sole criteria were weight and a decent (but not necessarily great) sound. That being said, the SK1 organ sounds are really sounds good and, surprisingly, the Casio has held up very well.
Anyway, today I am using a Yamaha MOX8 and my SK1 (I have recovered enough to begin getting better / heavier gear). The problem, though, is the SK1, while great for organ, has very weak horns, strings, etc.
So, last weekend I bought a PC3K6 to replace the SK1. It should arrive this week.
Well, anyway that's my story. I left out a few other keyboards I tried along the way, but those are my favs.
Thanks for reading.
Hi Terry,
Welcome!
Regards,
Fran
