Hi, I'm Richard and I'm based in Cambridge in the UK. My band is called Eclipse and we play rock and pop covers like Mr Blue Sky, Jump, Alive & Kicking, Ruby etc etc. I use an SP6 partnered with a Yamaha MOXF8
I used to play a PC3x and a Yamaha EX5 but eventually the PC3x's weight got the better of me - especially after when carrying it down a flight of steps one time I slipped off the bottom step and broke my foot. Well, it was either that or drop the Kurzweil and I'm hardly going to do that am I? ![]()
Very reluctantly I retired the PC3x in favour of the MOXF8 about a year ago. I then experimented with using soft synths and a laptop and an Arturia Keylab in place of the EX5. How do people get on with those? I'm as geeky as the next synth player but it was a nightmare, I want to play, not spend my life hunched over the laptop trying to work out why nothing's happening.
I moved on to using a great little piece of kit called Cantabile Performer on the laptop and using the Keylab to trigger the MOXF8 and that was okay. My entire rig now weighed less than the PC3x so I was happy - for a while. But the Keylab's a toy or it might as well be for anyone who's a reasonably physical performer and it's got no, well, presence. Finally my wife lost patience with my griping and told me to find another Kurzweil that didn't weigh a ton and happily that's where the SP6 came in. I'm really chuffed to have a Kurzweil for the band again, there really isn't anything like it.
