I have a question regarding how the Kurzweil system loads patches with insert effects..

First I want to stress this is NOT a "this one is better than that one" post, I just need to know so I can setup accordingly.

On Yamaha Motifs for example the insert effects assigned to a patch are actually loaded when you select the patch in any mode on the synth - sequencer, performance, master etc.

However on Korgs and Rolands, the effects are ONLY loaded with the patch in the sound modes. If the patch has insert effects assigned these are not loaded when selected in sequencer mod or performance mode and DEFINITELY not loaded from a midi file, even if the correct patch data is stored.

Makes it quite difficult to setup external midi songs assigning patches and so on, because if the efx are not loaded then the patch is only the base sample which of course sounds totally different!.

Now it can be done on Roland and Yamaha by also getting the sysex needed to embed into the midi file so insert effects can be included, but this is a bit of a p.i.t.a. tbh!

Roland/Korg work on a mixing desk principle, whereas Yamaha work on the principle that a selected sound should be loaded AS saved in all modes. Yes you can only have 8 parts (from 16) with insert efx, rather than being able to route 16 parts to a "bank" of efx, or rack if you like...but I prefer the system where if a patch change is sent from within a midi file, then that sound will be exactly the same as played on the keyboard...

So sorry for the long preamble, but the question is, what system does Kurzweil use?

Hi,

As you have an SP4 you can't see the internals of the programs (patches).

A Program has some insert FXs that are linked to that program. A program can also change the aux FXs, which are shared.

In Global mode you have a parameter called FX Select, that can be Performance or Multitrack. In Performance mode the machine tries to use the FX resources to the currently selected program first. So that the program that you are playing will have all its FXs, no matter in what MIDI Channel that program is. Programs in other channels might or might not have their FXs loaded, depending if the system have free resources for them or not. In Multitrack mode, the system gives priority to lower MIDI channels rather than higher MIDI Channels. So, if you are sequencing, put the most important programs in the lowest channels.

In Setup mode, in your SP4, you can change the Aux FX, that it is shared.

And yes, all that happens when programs are loaded.

Regards,
Fran

Cool,

thanks...

I may revisit this thread when I get the SP4 and have a play around with it :)

Maybe one more useful comment to better understand the way Kurzweil does it - (first know that I don´t have a SP-version, so I have no specific knowledge about this machine).
FX for sounds or combinations in Yamahas, Rolands, Korgs or any other synth I ever owned were a part of the chosen slot where it is stored. You may edit an FX, and all this was still a part of the actual sound and was stored with it.
The PC3 series (I guess also the SP) handle their FX and sounds apart from each other. You have a list of FX (that can be edited and stored as new ones, at least int the PC3 series) and you have a list of sounds. You can attach FX to a sound or a setup, and it will always stay at it´s own memory-slot. It´s like having a stand alone FX-device in your machine with it´s own programs, and also a synth without FX. The machine attaches both together, like 2 devices in one.
