The only external samples I've really spent time with are Synthogy's Ivory II grand pianos. It may be heresy to admit this in a Kurzweil forum, but those pianos are pretty great. After spending so many years with Kurzweil's pianos, just felt like I needed a change.
I haven't really explored the VST world as of yet.
What software are you folks using and on which platform?
Hi,
Not heresy at all. Ivory is a wonderful instrument made by ex-Kurzweil employees.
Now, try the Artis piano if you can as well... I know, another piece of hardware, but we are also offering a new piano... ![]()

I'm using Pianoteq 4 Pro exclusively on my computer. It's leaps and bounds better sounding, more flexible, and the most responsive virtual piano I've ever encountered.
Also I have quite a lot of other VST plugins, including NI Komplete 8, MachFive 3, u-he synths and effects, and various others.

Hi Fran, wow I didn't know that about Ivory! It makes sense to me though given the quality.
It pains me that I can't have the new Artis piano on my PC3x.
But I'm really glad you guys are continuing to develop great stuff. I'll be ready for more hardware once I master this PC3. Maybe summer of 2036. ![]()

I've heard good things about Pianoteq. May I ask which DAW are you using these plugins with?
I'm using Reaper 4.
Ableton Live 9. The plugins I use are the FXPansion stuff (the modelling plugins, not BFD), impOscar and East West Symphonic Choirs. Nearly everything else in the studio is done in hardware.

This might be a stupid question, but are you able to select programs on your Kurzweil from within Ableton. I'm using Logic and I can't seem to figure out how to get Logic to treat my PC3 like a MIDI slave and pull program names from it. I'm curious if you can do that it Ableton. Thanks!
You should be able to insert program change events in Logic's MIDI editor. Any DAW should be able to do that.

Thanks and yeah I can definitely manually insert program changes in Logic.
But I recall when I used a Roland JV-1080 rack module years ago, my sequencer app was able to pull up a list of all the programs available on that and I was able to select them by name, rather than manually inserting them by number in each each track. It was a huge convenience compared to looking up program/bank numbers on a PDF so I was kinda hoping that something similar could be done with my PC3.
If Logic allows you using your own program change maps, you can make your own for the PC3... I know I can do that in Reaper.

I'll definitely look into that, thanks.
I use an ancient version of Cakewalk Home Studio 9.01 (circa 1998) running under Wine in Linux to do my home recording and sequencing. I also occasionally use Cakewalk Music Creator 5.0 under Wine and Rosegarden running under native Linux.
All of my PC3K programs including Kore 64 are mapped in an INS file which thankfully has not changed in format for decades. Likewise I used a utility to create a RGD file for Rosegarden from the INS file (Instrument Definition File).
If your DAW has an available utility to import Cakewalk INS files you could save yourself a hell of a lot of time and trouble running it on the PC3 INS files which have been uploaded here to the forum in the files section.
That's all it really takes to select your programs from Cakewalk though setups are a different ball of wax.

I use program changes only with Ableton. I stick everything in 1 bank and leave it there. There was a bug sending bank change messages on Ableton Live 8, and I've not tested Live 9 to see if it's been fixed yet.
There is currently no way to pull program names from the PC3, apart from the software editor. The SYSEX spec has not been released and the SYSEX dump commands I've been able to discern pull down a lot more information than simply the program name, so it would take some careful programming for a script to just pull out the program names.
INS files or similar, are probably your best bet, if you mainly use the factory sounds, or your sounds don't change often on your PC3. If you are like me and program sounds as you write, it's probably more hassle than it's worth.
